Ryan Cossens has an affinity with desert racing that has seen him place inside the top ten at the Finke Desert Race on two occasions. The 24 year-old from Numukah in Victoria’s mid-north will this year enter the famous desert race aboard a Sherco 500 SEF Factory edition.
“I’m looking forward to racing the Sherco 500. I’m confident in the bike completely,” Cossens said. “I’ve had the Sherco for over a month and it’s already right to go racing. It’s a great bike straight from the showroom. The chassis and ergonomics are perfect for desert racing and I love the brakes which are powerful but easy to control. I love how responsive they are.”
After racing a 250cc four-stroke in 2018 and placing 20th outright, Cossens is looking forward to racing the Sherco and is hopeful of again placing inside the coveted top ten against the best desert racers in the country.
“My two top-ten placings at Finke were on 450cc machines which was great and last year I raced a 250cc four-stroke with really good support,” Cossens explained. “But this year I’m keen to climb the outright rankings again and the extra CCs of the Sherco 500 will help me do that. I think it’s the best bike to be on for Finke. I chose it because I believe it will perform the best in that event. I’m the fittest I’ve ever been and going off my training and practice riding I’m going to try and crack a top five result.”
Despite Cossens’ relatively short time aboard the Sherco, he is quick to sing the praise of the wider Sherco network.
“I love the mateship of everyone involved with Sherco. From dealers to the Sherco Race Team and anyone else I’ve communicated with, they’re all so helpful which makes it fun to be involved.”
The Finke Desert Race will take place in Alice Springs over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, June 7-10, 2019.
