In a bold move that could set a cat amongst the pigeons, former MX racer and more recently Sherco-mounted off-road racer, Justin Carafa, will race this weekend’s opening round of the 2018 MX Nationals aboard a Sherco 125 SE-R enduro bike.
Backed by Motorcycle Land Ballarat and the Motul Pirelli Sherco Team, Carafa is launching an assault on the 125cc Gold Cup and he intends to go toe-to-toe with the motocross bikes armed with an enduro weapon.
“I watched the 125cc Gold Cup last year and it looked like a lot of fun,” said Carafa. “I’ve stopped racing the off-road championship due to work commitments, but I can fit in a few motocross rounds. The guys at Motorcycle Land in Ballarat were keen on a Sherco 125cc project and with some help from the Motul Pirelli Sherco Team I’m ready to race.”
Carafa will race a relatively stock Sherco 125 SE-R and believes the enduro bike will be up to the task of motocross racing.
“This bike is awesome,” Carafa continued. “The engine is stock and it will be competitive. Straight out of the box it has a good amount of torque and plenty of top-end power. It’ll hold its own against the MX bikes and I think I can win on the Sherco.”
Despite not racing an MX National round since 2009, Carafa is enthusiastic about his return to the track.
“I love motocross and I have missed the close aggressive nature of racing other riders as opposed to racing the track in the off-road events. It will be good to get behind the gate again and give it a go. I’ve dropped a heap of weight from training hard and I think I will be competitive. Look out for the Motorcycle Land Ballarat Sherco this weekend. You’ll see the headlight. I can’t wait.”
Round one of the 2018 MX Nationals will take place at Newry, Victoria, this Sunday, April 15. Riding starts at 8.30am.
