Scottish riding tips from four-time winner Graham Jarvis.

As a Follow up to the article from Malcolm Rathmell in the last issue regarding bike preparation, we have invited Graham Jarvis to explain to all of our readers about this event. The Scottish is long and complicated, where experience is vital. We are sure you will enjoy these great tips from Graham. Many of them apply to riding any trials.

"After one last check of your bike, put it in the “parc ferme” (parking area) with a full tank of fuel and turn the fuel petcock off. I find it best to carry a rucksack (backpack) rather that just a bumbag (fanny pack), which I can put waterproofs and a bumbag inside. Unless the weather is really hot, it is normally best to start the days with waterproofs on, rain or not, especially if it is a long way on the road to the 1st section. Take off your waterproofs when you have warmed up.

When you arrive at the sections, check to see if the "exit" from the group is at the bottom of the hill, if so, put your rucksack at the bottom to save energy carrying it up the section.

When walking the sections, be sure to watch as many riders as possible. Look for the flattest, safest line with the least chance for a 5, Check rocks with your feet for grippiness and stability. If you are unsure which line to take, it is a good idea to ask the observer (they will normally give some good advice and information on previous riders). When you have decided your line and you are waiting in the queue, keep watching the other riders in front, and note the changes in the section i.e. rocks moving or a new line.

On the flatter sections, the Sherco 1st gear is perfect, allowing controlled riding without too much clutch. Occasionally on steeper waterfalls, you will need 2nd gear and a bit more speed. Some waterfalls look big but there is normally good grip - so it is important not to panic if you are slightly off line. On the more slippery sections try to keep the bike rolling and not revving, with the front end as light as possible.

If you're a fit rider (healthy), it's possible to look at the hard sections a little longer and make up the time on the moorland (but take it easy on the road!) and don't waste time on the easier sections. At time delays, try to keep warm by moving and put waterproofs on if necessary. Keep eating and drinking throughout the day and if you have any spare time waiting at sections (or at Coran Ferry etc), check the bike over, clean the mud from the radiator, between the skip plate and engine and around the front exhaust pipe.

Good Luck and Have Fun!"
